Fall in Michigan is full of apples, brilliant colors, and harvest festivals. As wineries have sprouted across the state, traditional harvest festivals have embraced the fall crush and the peculiar art of grape stomping. Spectators watch in delight as a brave few take off their shoes, roll up their pants, and climb into barrels full of grapes. No one knows exactly when or where people first started crushing grapes with their feet, but anyone who has ever tried it can tell you that it is fun and strangely satisfying.

The Paw Paw Wine & Harvest Festival is located in the heart of SW Michigan wine country, less than 90 minutes from our Eaton Rapids inn. The drive to Paw Paw is lovely, and passes through the fertile farmland that produces much of the produce celebrated during the Wine and Harvest Festival. There are several Michigan wineries between Eaton Rapids and Paw Paw, as well, most of which are open to visitation.

The 2010 Paw Paw Wine & Harvest Festival takes place September 9 – 12. In addition to grape stomping, there will be 5K walk/run, a bike tour, and a Hole in One contest. Check out Big Mo’s Wonderful World of Electric Trains, and the Arts and Crafts Fair. Throw in a car show, a parade, and lots of live music, and the Paw Paw Festival is guaranteed to be entertaining. Winery tours and a beer and wine tent ensure that visitors will find many opportunities to taste locally produced Michigan wine and beer.
