Christmas Events near Lansing Michigan

November 30th, 2012 by insideout

Hopefully you are feeling all caught up with holiday cheer! If not, we have some fun events coming up in celebration of the season that should get you in the mood.

Michigan Christmas Traditions at Meridian Historical Village

In case you haven’t been, the Meridian Historical Village is located in the Central Park of Okemos, Michigan, about 20 minutes from our Lansing area bed and breakfast. It is a great place for history buffs and contains authentic buildings relocated and carefully restored to their original 19th century style. The Village is operated by the Friends of Historic Meridian, a non-profit organization; the group preserves and maintains the historic buildings.

For Christmas, all of the historic buildings will be decorated and open to the public. The fun begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday December 9th with a Christmas Tea in the Barnes House. The cost is $10 per person. This event is popular, so make sure to call and reserve your spot: 517-347-7300.

Meridian Historical Village Christmas

Santa’s on his way to the Meridian Historical Village

After tea, peruse the village. You will enjoy seeing these lovingly restored homes and structures as pieces of American history. Each building will be decorated in a manner that reflects the cultural traditions of the early pioneer settlers in this area. The staff will be dressed in period clothing, sharing their insights about Christmas traditions of the past. While exploring, enjoy refreshments for sale and peek into our gift shop. Also, crafts will be available for you to make and take home. This event is fun for a wide range of ages.

At four o’clock, the community Christmas tree lighting takes place and Santa comes for a visit.

Potter Park Zoo Holiday Lights

Wonderland of Lights celebrates its 20th year at Potter Park Zoo! Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night until 2013, come experience the zoo by night with a stroll illuminated by tens of thousands of lights. Guests are treated to special animal presentations, cookie decorating, craft stations and more.  Special musical guests and events take place as well; this weekend the Laingsburg High School Band will perform. See all the performers on the zoo website. Wonderland of Lights runs from 5 – 8 p.m.  Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for kids (ages 3-16).

Meridian Historical Village

March 19th, 2011 by insideout

Just 30 minutes northeast of our luxury Lansing MI Bed and Breakfast is the Meridian Historical Village. A handful of buildings from the 19th century were moved to this picturesque site overlooking Lake Catherine, and then restored; the result is a charming historic village.

Many of these buildings were slated for destruction – moving them to their new home in Okemos allowed them to be saved and restored. The village includes a one-room school, a pioneer’s log cabin, a farmhouse, and an inn and tavern. The only building that is not historic is the Village Chapel, which is an exact replica of the 1870 church that originally stood in Okemos.
