The Turner-Dodge House – Window on the 19th Century

March 13th, 2021 by Corey A. Edwards

Turner-Dodge HouseStep back in time to the 19th century with a visit to the 1855 Turner-Dodge House, aka Dodge Mansion, a beautifully restored historic house museum in Lansing, MI.

The Turner-Dodge House has stood in Old Town Lansing for more than 160 years. It was one of the first large homes to be built in Lansing and was home to several generations of an important pioneer family.

The house gets its Turner-Dodge name from the first families to live here. Marion and James Turner built the house in 1858 after moving to Lansing from Mason. James operated a mercantile store and Marion was a school teacher. Later, James would also speculate in real estate and build a foundry.

Abby Turner, Marion and James’ daughter, married Frank Dodge in 1888. The couple bought the house after they married, enlarging and redesigning it to accommodate the expanding family. A renovation that completely changed the house’s appearance.

The Turners and Dodges were more than just wealthy white landowners. They were true pioneers who helped to develop Michigan’s capitol city. They were also progressive, supporting higher education for women, the abolition of slavery, and liquor control.

The family lived in the house until 1958, when it was sold to the Great Lakes Bible College. The city of Lansing purchased the mansion in 1974 and, after substantial renovation, opened it as a historic house museum.

A New Website for The English Inn, Restaurant and Pub!

October 18th, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

A New Website for The English Inn, Restaurant and Pub!

A new website for The English Inn, Restaurant and Pub!

You may have noticed things looking a little different on the site of late – that’s because The English Inn, Restaurant and Pub has a new website!

The English Inn, Restaurant and Pub is a historic business but, along with respecting and preserving the Medovue Estate and the luxurious, yesteryear experience a visit or stay here can provide, we also aim to keep things up-to-date: a perfect marriage of the best of the past with the best of the present, in other words.

A website is part of that and we knew we were looking a bit dated. Our last site had served The English Inn, Restaurant and Pub well and long – but it was time for a change. We wanted a site that worked well with present technologies, had the flexibility for a lengthy lifespan, and one that more accurately represented the present face of our business – and we feel like we got that in spades!

For our visitors, this means a website that works to fit seamlessly into the screen you’re viewing it on, no matter whether that’s a brand new, 29″ flat screen on your desk or a smart-phone display in your palm. In the case of the latter, so much for squinting and waiting ’til you get home to peruse our site: our new website is surfable wherever and whenever.
