Theater is a wonderful way to escape for a few hours. Find your seat, the lights go dim, and you get to focus on someone else and their life full of problems, worry, farce or joy. Performance is a tradition from the earliest of cultures; yet today we still love to watch stories about our fellow humans come to life on the stage (or the screen). Here is some compelling new live theater taking place in Lansing this month.

Compulsion, Or The House Behind. By Rinne Groff. Directed by Mycah Artis. $15 general admission, $10 student and seniors 65 and over.
Compulsion, Or the House Behind. At the Peppermint Creek Theater Company (6025 Curry Lane, Lansing) from March 21-24 & 28-30. Sid Silver is a man obsessed. When he learns about a young girl named Anne Frank and her extraordinary diary, Silver makes it his mission to ensure her tale is heard. But is the manuscript a work of art? A cultural treasure? Once publishers and producers get involved, it becomes “a very valuable product”—and his good intentions prove to be his undoing.
Shirley Valentine. At the Williamson Theater (122 S. Putnam St., Williamston) from March 21- April 21. A one-woman, tour-de-force that’s been a classic since it won the Tony Award 20 years ago. Julia Glander stars in this story of one woman’s journey of self-discovery.
RAIN. At the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts (750 E Shaw Ln, East Lansing) on Friday March 29. Direct from Broadway, this is a musical performance by the renowned Beatles cover band RAIN. The Associated Press called seeing a Rain concert “the next best thing to seeing the Beatles.” The group performs the full range of The Beatles’ discography live onstage, including the most complex and challenging songs that The Beatles themselves recorded in the studio but never performed for an audience. Together longer than The Beatles, RAIN has mastered every song, gesture and nuance of the legendary foursome, delivering a totally live, spot-on performance. From the early hits to later classics this is a wonderful chance to re-live the unforgettable melodies created by John, Paul, Ringo and George.
